11 Comet - Giacobini-Zinner

11 Comet - Giacobini-Zinner

Date: Imaged 10 September 2018 (4:30 am) br/Location: Halifax, NS br/Equipment: Orion 80mm f6 ED-triplet refractor/ ZWO ASI224MC CMOS camera with UV/IR cut filter; prime focus, unguided; gain 275, 20 sec exposure/HEQ-5 mount. br/Processing: 50 subs and 10 darks were captured as RGB24/PNG images, which were debayered and stacked with DeepSkyStacker. The comet stacking setting was used to prevent star trailing while giving a sharp image of the comet. Photoshop CS2 was used for to adjust levels, curves (stretching data) and color balance/saturation, as well as for noise reduction. StarTools was used to correct a slight elongation of stars due to minor tracking error. Microsoft Photo was used to tweak clarity, contrast, highlights, shadows, and exposure of the final jpg image. br/Comments: Although not visible to the naked eye, Comet Giacobini-Zinner/P21 was visible using 10x50 binoculars as a faint patch of diffuse light, and was an easy target for a small telescope, even with the light pollution of suburban Halifax. The short tail of the comet, located just beneath Auriga, is visible in the processed image.
