M27 aka The Dumbbell Nebula

M27 Dumbbell nebula. It's a planetary nebula around 1300 light years away. Discovered by Charles Messier. The term quot;planetary nebulaquot; was coined with this object by William Herschel who though that it resembled his newly discovered planet Uranus. Not a very good name really since it's really just a star that came to the end of it's nuclear reacting phase, turning to a red giant and finally ejecting much of its mass in to space. Becoming a white dwarf star, slowly cooling but still lighting up the expelled gas. Our sun is expected to become a planetary nebula something like this in 4.5 billion years or so.br/ Imaging telescope / lensbr/ Celestron Cassegrain 203/2032 mm EdgeHD8br/ Imaging camerabr/ ZWO Optical ASI 1600 MM Pro (CMOS)br/ Mountbr/ Equatorial Losmandy GM811Gbr/ Guiding telescope / lensbr/ Celestron Cassegrain 203/2032 mm EdgeHD8br/ Guiding camerabr/ ZWO Optical ASI 178 MC (CMOS)br/ Accessoriesbr/ Focal reducer Celestron 0.7br/ Lights (filter H-alpha)25 x 300 secbr/ Lights (filter OIII)21 x 300 secbr/ Lights (filter SII)16 x 300 secbr/ Total lights integration time 5:10 hours
