02 Partially Eclipsed Moon Rising over Haleakala

This truly is a full moon – except that it is partially eclipsed. The image was taken from the summit of Haleakala, the highest volcanic peak on Maui, Hawaii at 18:11 on Jan 20, 2019. The triangular shadow, gently peaking precisely below the moon is created by the mild profile of the shield volcano itself. Even though we knew that the partially eclipsed moon would rise at exactly that location, its surreal appearance out of the mists of the ocean horizon inspired gasps of awe from the assembled watchers. As the eclipse approached totality, the moon rose out of the moisture-laden atmosphere at lower elevations and ascended to its rightful place in the crystal-clear skies above. Capture details: Canon 5D camera on a fixed mount, 100-400 mm zoom lens set to 100 mm, aperture 7.1, exposure time 0.008 sec, ISO 100.
