Sunset above the clouds on Mauna Kea, Hawaii at 18:52 on Jan 25, 2019.We had set aside one evening on our recent trip to Hawaii to take in the normally clear, dark skies at the Visitor Information Station on Mauna Kea. Fortunately, as the sun began to settle in the west, its waning strength was no longer able to sustain the clouds that had been sweeping over our destination. By sunset, the clouds had retreated just below the knoll from which I took this photo. An hour later, they were far down the mountainside, leaving us with a panoramic view of the night sky unimpeded by the denser, more moisture-laden atmosphere below. (See also photos 10 and 12.)
