11-Auroras

ldquo;Neighbourhood Aurorardquo;br/ I was sitting at home this particular evening when my daughter called me from Ottawa (3 hours east) to say she was seeing colours in the evening sky. I went out to see if anything was visible south of Peterborough and to my surprise the northern lights (aurora borealis) were just getting started. I grabbed my camera gear and tripod and ran around my neighbourhood taking time exposures between 20 and 40 seconds in hopes of capturing the continuous movement and colour changes I was witnessing. I continued to shot until all my camera batteries were dead. It is rare that we get such a strong aurora display this far south (44 degrees latitude), but afterwards I discovered that this display was seen as far south as California and Oklahoma! I am not surprised, because what I saw here was more colour and movement than I have seen in decades, including rings of pulsing curtains overhead to the zenith. This was an amazing display of the Sunrsquo;s power, without having to go to the Arctic Circle. In my image, I particularly like that the constellations of Orion, Gemini, Auriga and Taurus (including M45), shone through the curtains of light. The house in this image is my neighbourlsquo;s across the street.br/ Details: November 7, 2004, in Otonabee-South Monaghan Township, Peterborough County, Ontario.br/ Nikon Coolpix E4500, tripod mounted at ISO 400, 25 sec., f/3.0, with fisheye adapter lens.
