07-ISS

ldquo;Space Dumprdquo;br/ When I heard that the Space Shuttle Discovery was detached from the ISS in preparation for their return to Earth I figured this particular evening would be a good opportunity to record these two spacecraft orbiting the Earth. So, I set-up in my backyard with camera and tripod to do a time exposure. Utilizing the predictions from Heavens-Above.Com I knew when and where to be looking for the appearance of these two bright spots as they raced across the northern sky. Right on schedule they appeared and heading for the Big Dipper. However, as they traveled west to east across the sky and knowing the shuttle was ahead of the ISS, I noticed that the shuttle was much brighter than the ISS. The image does not capture what I saw, which was a bright white curved ldquo;tailrdquo; below the Shuttle as it flew ahead of the ISS. It was very strange looking. My exposure of 30 seconds does show the much brighter streak left by the shuttle ahead of the ISS though. I found out the next day that the shuttle crew in preparing to return to Earth the next day was doing a scheduled ldquo;waste waterrdquo; dump. When you consider that the ISS has a solar panel array the size of the football field, the shuttle had to be doing something unique to out reflect the ISS and this is no doubt is what I captured.br/ Details: September 9, 2009, from my backyard looking NW towards skyglow of Kawartha Downs Racetrack/Slots, Peterborough, Ontario.br/ Canon 400D, tripod mounted with a Sigma lens at ISO 800, 30 sec., f/4.0, 10mm
