08-The Milky Way

ldquo; The Emurdquo;br/ During a three month trip to Australia in 2014, I had the pleasure of connecting with local amateur astronomers of the Brisbane Astronomical Society and I was able to attend one of their monthly camping trips to a private dark sky site near Wyallah, due west of Brisbane. From this location I was able to use their telescopes to view many treasures of the southern hemisphere skies, but I was also armed with my own imaging gear. In the wide field view included here, is the prominent band of the Milky Way and included in it is ldquo; The Emurdquo;. This is comprised mostly of all the dark nebula and dust lanes from upper right diagonally down to the lower left. This profile of an outstretched, long-necked bird starts with the ldquo;headrdquo; being made of the Coalsack Nebula (Caldwell 99), crowned by the asterism of the Southern Cross. To the immediate lower left embedded in the ldquo;neckrdquo; of the emu are Alpha and Beta Centauri. Then the bulk of the ldquo;bodyrdquo; is the centre of our galaxy around the constellations of Scorpius and Sagittarius. I did not want that night to end, but I have at least a souvenir for my efforts.br/ Details: April 6, 2014, Wyallah, Queensland, Australiabr/ Canon 50D (Hutech Modified), on tripod mounted iOptron Skytracker mount and Sigma lens at ISO 2000, 30 sec., f/4.5, 10mm
