03_Ursid_meteor_pair Canon 5D mark iii 6mm f/3.5 20s ISO 6400br/ 20191223 01:19:40 UT. Legal, Alberta. A crop of a fisheye frame. br/ One of the pleasures in meteor observing is to simply sit back and watch while the camera ticks away all by itself. In the 40+ years of observing, this was actually my first session with the Ursids. Conveniently, 2 meteors showed up in the same 20 second interval, nicely pointing back to the radiant, labeled R. Precautions against the cold are necessary: 1) the camera is energized by a 12V-battery via a quot;buckquot; converter to 7.5V which then plugs into the quot;dummyquot; battery (normally used with a 120V adapter). Otherwise the normal batteries lose their power too quickly. 2) The same 12V source is hooked up to a quot;dew heaterquot; a strap with nichrome wire inside of appropriate resistance to produce about 4W of heat that wraps around the front of the lens to keep it above the frost/dew point. Tonight's temperature wasn't too bad, around -12C.
