In the summer of 2000 I bought my first digital camera, a Nikon Coolpix 800. It was mainly for taking snapshots and holiday pictures, but I soon turned it to astrophotography. It didn't have very good resolution compared to modern DSLRs, but it was wonderful to see results right away, and to be able to take hundreds of shots without worrying about the cost of the film and the developing. This picture of a sun ring uses a deck post in my Ottawa back yard to block the sun. I presented this picture as part of a presentation to the RASC Ottawa Centre in August 2000 documenting my initial experiments with this camera.
