05 Mercury Venus Moon Conjunction

05 Mercury Venus Moon Conjunction

In May 2020, Ottawans were treated to a series of beautifully clear evenings just as Mercury and Venus were dancing together in the western sky at sunset. I am lucky to live near the Experimental Farm and it has been a wonderful place to walk during the pandemic. For these clear evenings in May, I loaded myself with camera, zoom lens and tripod and found a spot with a good view towards the west. I have other pictures of Mercury and Venus as they moved closer and closer together. On May 23, the moon was only 1 day past new (1 day and 8 hours to be more precise) and I had hopes of seeing it also. Of course at that time of year, the sun sets very late and twilight lasts a long time, and the mosquitoes come out at dusk, so it was a long and frustrating (slap) wait (slap) for the sky to get dark enough to take this picture. But success at last, and I did catch glimpses of the VERY thin moon with my own eyes (just left of the middle bottom of this picture.) As I hurried home afterwards, I found another couple of astronomers set up along Cow Lane. We briefly compared notes and the excitement of seeing Mercury and such a young moon.br/Date: 2020-05-23br/ Time: 21:47 EDTbr/ Location: Central Experimental Farm, Ottawa, ONbr/ Equipment: Canon EOS REBEL T1i DSLR, Canon 55-250mm zoom lens, tripodbr/ Settings: f/9, F=70mm, 1/3 s, ISO400
