15 Venus Jupiter and Scorpius

15 Venus Jupiter and Scorpius

The main image was taken at 05:51 on January 22, 2019 from an AirBnB on a hillside coffee plantation on the island of Hawaii. It shows Venus and Jupiter beside the constellation, Scorpius. The dashed line joins Tau Scorpii (on the right) and Omicron Serpentis (on the left). The inset image, taken six days later, at 05:44 on January 28, 2019, clearly shows the speedy passage of the brighter planet, Venus, as it overtakes the more sedate progress of Jupiter as revealed by the dashed line joining the same two stars as in the main image. The easterly, uphill view was reasonably free of light pollution – moonlight on the papaya trees in the foreground and lights in a neighbour’s house as he prepared to leave for an early-morning work shift didn’t count as pollution in my books. It was a great luxury to be able to climb out of bed at around 5:30 am, take a few pictures of the pre-dawn sky without bundling up in a thick overcoat, and then go back to bed for a bit more sleep before starting the day in earnest. Capture details: For main image: Canon 5D camera on a fixed mount, 24-105 mm zoom lens set to 24 mm, aperture 14, exposure time 30 sec, ISO 3200. For inset, as above, but with aperture 5.6, exposure time 10 sec (alterations to cope with increased light pollution from the moon).
