14 Aurora Borealis

14 Aurora Borealis

On the very last of 10 nights in the Yukon, I finally managed to observe the Aurora Borealis. With the outside temperature hovering around -20C, I set the camera looking out through my bedroom window so that I could experiment with a variety of settings in relative comfort for my first attempt at photographing an auroral display. After an hour and a half (at 03:05 on Feb 27, 2019), I took this 2-minute exposure of the aurora at its peak. I was particularly pleased to find, when I previewed the photo, the hint of red suffusing the sky above the prominent green band. This reddish tint was invisible to the naked eye – at least to my 70-year-old ones. Capture details: Canon 5D camera on a fixed mount, 24-105 mm zoom lens set to 24 mm, aperture 6.3, exposure time 2 min, ISO 1600.
