05_20150928TLE_1.jpg Canon 60Da 17-40mm @ 27mm f/5 ISO 1000br/ Edmonton, Alberta. Couldn't have asked for better conditions! There were about 30 folks from the RASC packed in a small viewing area overlooking the North Saskatchewan river through Edmonton. Well ahead of time I had to plan carefully the balance between duration of the eclipse and amount of sky, which would give me the required focal length, accounting for some foreground below the horizon. The high ISO of 1000 was required in order to quickly capture 6 exposures 2EV apart, from 1.3s to 1/800 sec in order to make a high dynamic range composite (using enfuseGUI) without having the Moon shift enough to blur the result. Then repeat this every 7 seconds so I can make a time-lapse. 5772 images in just under 2 hours! An advantage of the large range of exposures is that from daylight to darkness there are always frames that never overexpose the Moon and some that always capture the foreground - and it's hands-off so I can watch in binoculars or a small scope. A selection of images was then imported into GIMP and layered using quot;lightenquot; to create the composite.
