05-Moon-Jupiter-and-Jovian-Moons-sb

This was a very exciting picture for me to take. I have observed Jupiter in a telescope hundreds of times and consider it an old friend. If Jupiter is up, no observing session is complete without having at least a quick look. And, there are few sights in the sky that help me connect with the sky more strongly than Jupiter and the motions of its moons. When I realized this conjunction was coming I decided to try to capture some of the Jovian moons, something I had never done before. I took a series of photographs, varying the exposure, and this final image is a combination of two of those shots. It was necessary to over-expose Jupiter itself in order to see the very faint moons. In the photograph, Callisto is at the top and Ganymede is at the bottom. Europa and Io, just below the disc of the planet, show here as a slightly elongated dot.br/ Detail:br/ Moonbr/ Date: March 21, 2016 (8:20:26pm)br/ Camera: Nikon D810br/ Lens: Nikkor 200-400mm f4.0, at 400mmbr/ Settings: 1/800 second, f8.0, ISO 1250br/ Jupiter with moonsbr/ Date: March 21, 2016 (8:20:31pm)br/ Camera: Nikon D810br/ Lens: Nikkor 200-400mm f4.0, at 400mmbr/ Settings: 1/2 second, f8.0, ISO 1250
