12 Solar Eclipse

12 Solar Eclipse

Lincoln City, Oregon 2017-08-21 9:49am to 12:37pm br/Sony A7RII, Orion ED80T CF Triplet Refractor, Celestron AVX mount, Solar filter f/6, ISO100 various exposures (1/200 to 1.5sec) br/In March of 2017 I decided I needed to image the Aug eclipse. At this point we did not own an equatorial mount, telescope or adequate tripod. I had no experience or knowledge around imaging an eclipse. I read everything I could over a 6 month period to prepare me for the moment. We purchased a new mount, tripod and telescope. Hotel reservations were difficult but I found a location on the beautiful Oregon Coast. This would be a great road trip. Pacific Coast Highway and an eclipse! Gear was tested, procedure was tested, location was determined. All we needed was a clear morning. The forecast the 2 proceeding days was cloudy. The day of the eclipse was clear. We were so excited about the clear morning. Everything was going so well until the temperature dropped due to the moon eclipsing the sun. The marine layer moved in and fogged the sky. My heart sank. I had not anticipated this. I continued to image though the fog and hoped for the best. Amazingly the telescope/camera was able to see through the fog and produced impressive images. Lesson learned for future eclipse, do not head to the coast.
