01 Sunrise Venus Transit

01 Sunrise Venus Transit

This was the most memorable sunrise I have ever experienced. On 2004-06-08 Venus was just finishing its transit across the face of the sun as the sun was rising in Ottawa. I had told my high school students and family about this event and invited them to join me at sunrise at the top of the highest point in Ottawa, the Carlington Summit. On that morning, three of my students and my mother-in-law actually dragged themselves out of bed in time to join me at dawn. We were amazed to find that the morning clouds and mist actually allowed us to see the rising sun with a small black dot on one side without the need for any optical aids! However it soon brightened and we switched to observing safely with a small Tasco refractor equipped with a projection screen inside a box.br/Date: 2004-06-08 Time: 06:00 EDTbr/ Location: Carlington Summit, Ottawa, ONbr/ Equipment: Nikon E800 camera, Tasco refractor with projection screenbr/ Settings: f/7.4, 1/60 s, ISO100
