17 Sundog over Alaska Highway

17 Sundog over Alaska Highway

I captured this image at 15:47 on February 15, 2019 on a mid-winter driving trip from Calgary to Whitehorse. As we wound our way through the Northern Rockies with the temperature hovering around -18C, the weak sun could not dispel the tiny ice crystals in the air above us. The result was this faint sundog. The highway was mostly deserted except for intrepid maintenance workers and long-haul truckers, one of whom stopped to see if we needed help as I was putting my camera gear away. Although I have a photo of brighter sundogs over Whitehorse, I prefer the lonely landscape along the snow-and-ice covered Alaska Highway. Capture details: Hand-held Canon 5D camera, 24-105 mm zoom lens set to 24 mm, aperture 11, exposure time 0.004 sec, ISO 100.
