12 Constellation Canis Major

12 Constellation Canis Major

This is one of the few constellations that looks much like the creatures that it supposedly represents. After managing to identify the key stars (not an easy task for me), I find that it does indeed look much like a dog following its master, Orion, also partially visible here. The image also contains the two brightest stars in the night sky: Sirius and Canopus, along with Rigel, the seventh brightest star in the night sky. I took this photo at 21:35, toward the end of a chilly evening on Jan 25, 2019 at the Visitor Information Station on Mauna Kea, Hawaii. Despite numbing fingers, I was anxious to make the best of my opportunity to photograph the remarkably clear, dark skies for which this site is so renowned. Capture details: Canon 5D camera on a fixed mount, 24-105 mm zoom lens set to 24 mm, aperture 5.6, exposure time 10 sec, ISO 3200.
