10 Star Trails across the Equator
This image was taken at 20:01 on Jan 25, 2019 from the Visitor Information Station on Mauna Kea, Hawaii, at latitude 20ο N. Polaris is just left of the lower left corner of the image. The brightest star trail, in the upper right corner, is Sirius, slightly south of the celestial equator. The star trails near Sirius are starting to curve in the opposite direction, around the distant south celestial pole. The Milky Way is visible from just below Sirius through to the constellation, Auriga, in the upper left region of the image. This image prompted me to begin to learn how to stack multiple images to control the exposure more effectively in such images – and to purchase a fisheye lens to capture more of the sky. Capture details: Canon 5D camera on a fixed mount, 17-40 mm zoom lens set to 17 mm, aperture 5.6, exposure time 11 min, ISO 800.
