Title: Visit by an Early Perseid

Location: Halifax, NS
Equipment: Tripod-mounted Canon Rebel T3 DSLR at ISO-400 with kit lens at 18mm f/3.5; 20 sec exposure.
Processing: A series of 20 sec exposures were captured using the T3 DSLR’s continuous setting over a 2 h period. A single image containing a meteor was identified. RAW16 format was converted to TIFF format using Canon’s Digital Photo Professional. Photoshop CS2 was used for to adjust levels and color balance/saturation, as well as for noise removal. Microsoft Photo was used to tweak color, clarity, contrast, highlights, shadows, and exposure of the final jpg image.
Comments: I aimed my DSLR in the direction of Perseus this morning, hoping to catch an early Perseid meteor. This year the Perseids have a period from 17 July to 24 August Capturing 2 hours of continuous 20 seconds exposures gave me this single image of a Perseid meteor streaking through Cassiopeia! The lighter area on the bottom right side of the image is due to light pollution from Halifax/Dartmouth and the Bedford Basin container port.
