12 Asterism

12 Asterism

12 Asterism - During my flat screen planetarium shows I introduce people to the concept of asterisms as targets for binocular viewing. The first one I show them is the Coathanger (also known as Brocchi’s Cluster or Cr 399) in the constellation Vulpecula. It is easy to locate, not far from Albireo and on the line from Vega to Altair and it fills the binocular view. It is also in the night sky for an extended period of time so it remains a good target on field trips. I use this photo to illustrate a binocular view and to show that one can almost include Albireo in the view if they know which way to look.
